Elementary Workshop Montessori School (Class 5) Adopts-A-Wetland

As part of the Adopt A Wetland Program we are asked to visit our wetland at least once a season.  Our first visit was October 25, 2005.  Students took pictures to document their visit.  They learned to use the binoculars and did some sketching in a recording notebook.

Amy and McCrae took a trip on February 13, 2006 right after a snow. In the winter our trip was really on the first day of spring but it was certainly cold enough, we went in smaller groups over three days.  Not many birds had returned yet.

On April 8th we attended the Wetlands Program provided by the Aquatic Resources Education Center.  We participated in a wonderful program called the Eco-Explorers where we learned much about a Salt Water Marsh, looked for animal signs, tested water, keyed fish species, collected macroinvertebrates and had a great day learning about how to know more about the marsh and how to care for it.

On April 10th we travelled to New York City to the American Musuem of Natural History to attend the annual YouthCaN conference.  We took our "marsh card game" with us to share with other students interested in the environment.

We had a great visit to the marsh on May 8, 2006.  We were thrilled to see the birds and the signs of new growth.  We had Kathy Tidball join us and had a chance to do some water testing like we learned on our Field Trip to the Aquatic Resource Education Center in April.  Mary Ann was able to show us many different kinds of birds that day and explain some of their habits.
