Modern Marsh

In the Modern Period, the marsh is being restored. People are not taking food from the marsh, but they are using the marsh and the land around it for learning and recreation.

The marsh is being improved in many ways. A new sluice gate has been installed so water can flow back and forth between the marsh and the river. This water helps keep the marsh rich and clean. It also lets fish and other animals move in and out of the marsh. The Department of Natural Resources Environmental Control (DNREC) helps take care of the marsh. They try to cut back the Phragmites by burning it. When the Phragmites is gone, a lot more plants and animals grow in the marsh.  There are now more cattails, pickerel weed, arrow arum and native bushes and around the marsh. Animals that eat these plants stop over in the marsh live there now, too. There are animals like herons, ducks, muskrats, beaver, deer and raccoons using marsh.  Wood ducks have used these boxes for nesting.

People can enjoy walking on the sidewalk between the river and marsh. They can come to the nearby park to play on the playground and bring binoculars to the marsh to watch the birds.

People can help take care of the marsh too. Everybody can pitch in to pick up trash and keep the marsh clean.
