Let’s Go Fly A Kite
A family project
Dear EWMS Families:
We are excited about an opportunity and hope you will be too. On Wednesday ~ March 21, 2007 (Spring Equinox equal day and night) students in many places throughout the world will be flying homemade kites together. We hope the kite designs will include thoughts about and hopes and dreams for peace.
The idea is to have a conversation about peace through kite design and the experience of flying the kites throughout the world at the same time. Families are encouraged to design and create symbols for peace for their kites. The shared experience of flying peace kites on the same day will further instill the idea of global peace.
Last year students from Israel and Palestine flew kites on the same day. There was even a time, when the children’s kites could “see” each other on either side of the wall! This year, the teacher who started this project (Ruty Hotzen from Israel and IEARN) will be in NYC with some students and will fly kites with students there and some of the children from Israel will be in Poland to fly the kites with students there. Students in Poland and Israel are learning about Janusz Korzack.
We would like you and your family to participate as well. Attached to this note you will find some patterns and ideas for making kites (though we are sure some of you already know how to make a kite)! We plan to take the whole school over to Garrett Tubman Riverfront Park (near the train station) in the middle of the day (lunch time for a picnic - please bring your lunch too) on March 21 to fly our kites, and hope that as many of you as possible will meet us over there to share the experience and to eat lunch. We will video tape the event and share our adventure with schools in different parts of the world via the internet.
If you find a good resource for making kites email Amy I will add it to our page!
