Instead of driving to a place that is pretty close by, try riding a bike there.

Re-enrollment

Re-enrollment packets were sent home yesterday.  If you did not receive yours, please check with the classroom teachers or the office.  Remember, re-enrollment documentation must be returned by February 17 to receive the re-enrollment rate.

Recycle Bank Grant
Since last week, you have donated 7,500 points to Recycle Bank on our behalf.  We are down to needing 15,500 points to meet the requirement and receive our grant from Recycle Bank. At the Recycle Bank website, just go to “Get Rewards,” then to “Green Schools Program,” and then scroll through until you find us!  Thanks in advance for helping us reach our goal.

The Montessori Community
Catherline McTameney will be addressing Montessori parents on Thursday, February 11, from 7:00 – 9:00 PM.  Attached here is a flier about that evening talk.

The Silent Journey
"The Silent Journey" will take place on Saturday, February 6, 2010 beginning at 8:30 AM. This program is especially valuable for parents of children who will be “moving up” to the next level at the school.  Parents of children leaving EC or EI will benefit from learning about the different expectations, materials, and routines at the next stage in their children’s Montessori careers.  Even if your child is not changing classrooms, the Silent Journey is eyeopening and illuminating.  Call either McCrae or Victoria to sign up or to get more details about the program.

Correction

Our new music teacher’s name was misspelled in last week’s newsletter.  Her name is Mindy Bowman.

Maintenance Day
Many thanks to Elizabeth, Kerry, Matt, and Umesh who were here last Saturday morning taking care of the school’s maintenance needs.  We are grateful for the freshly painted shelves, the trimmed trees, and the myriad other jobs that you tackled.

Book Fair Questions
The Library Committee changed the book fair to November this year with the idea in mind that 1) a book fair in November might make holiday shopping convenient for parents and 2) the committee could yet schedule a second book fair during TV Turn-off Week, if there were interest.  Dianne Soccio-Knapp asks that you let her know if you preferred the November timing to our traditional April book fair, and if you would like to have a second book fair this year.

Ski Trip
For many years, EWMS has organized a ski trip in February.  For the last several years, the group going on the trip has dwindled to a couple of dozen.  We are eager to organize the ski trip to the Poconos again this year if there is sufficient interest among EWMS families.  Please let McCrae know if you and your family are interested in participating in the ski trip scheduled for February 12, 2010.

Elementary Testing

EWMS teachers will be administering the Terra Nova standardized test to all children in second grade and older next Tuesday through Friday.  Please make arrangements to have your children arrive at school well-rested, having eaten a nutritious breakfast, and on time.  Thanks for helping your children do their best on these tests.

Coming soon …
To a school near you:  the Box Tops for Education Challenge.  Stay tuned!

Fundraising News
Remember, EWMS will hold its annual fundraiser on Saturday, April 17, at The Exchange on Market Street.  In addition to a chili cook-off, the event features a fabulous Silent Auction.  We appreciate your help in soliciting items for the auction.  If you procure a gift basket, card, or item, you may certainly send it into school.  If you need documentation, ideas, or guidance, please contact Victoria.

Parent Meetings
In light of the recent charter application submission by the First State Montessori Academy and that school’s partnership with the Elementary Workshop Montessori School, members of the FSMA board will be hosting two question and answer meetings tomorrow at EWMS.  Please join FSMA board members at 8:00 AM for a traditional EWMS Café- style morning meeting or at 3:15 PM after school.  The FSMA board will also plan an evening meeting for folks who were unable to attend either of the meetings tomorrow.

Assembly Line

AppleMark Our Assembly organizer, Mythili Pisolkar, has organized Junior Achievement programs for our students.  Designed to promote the understanding of banking, professionalism and practical financial decision-making, each session involves lessons and activities at the children’s level.  Parent volunteers, Kym Liebler, Mary Beth Miller, Shruti Sharma, and Lauren McMahon have been helping Mythili and our own Michelle Woods conduct the classes.

Haitian Relief
As you are aware, we have a collection jar in each classroom for Haitian Relief.  The situation in Haiti is ever more dire, and the children at EWMS are increasingly interested in what is happening there and how they can help.  Thank you for the contributions you have already made possible for and with your children.  We will send all collected money off next Friday, January 29, 2010 and will let you know how much your children raised.
