Re-enrollment
Re-enrollment packets were sent home last week. Remember, re-enrollment documentation must be returned by February 17 to receive the lower re-enrollment tuition rate.
Recycle Bank Grant
Since last week, you have donated a further 1,400 points to Recycle Bank on our behalf. We are down to needing 14,100 points to meet the requirement and receive our grant from Recycle Bank. At the Recycle Bank website, just go to “Get Rewards,” then to “Green Schools Program,” and then scroll through until you find us! Thanks in advance for helping us reach our goal.
Ski Trip
Over the last several years, our ski trip has attracted ever fewer families due, in part, to the fact that tubing was no longer open on weekdays. Tubing offered a nice alternative to families with young children and to those folks for whom skiing was not appealing or possible. There has been no interest expressed in the ski trip this year, and so we have decided to cancel the trip. In spite of this calendar change, we will maintain our Valentine’s Day festivities (and Ice Cream Party) on Wednesday, February 11, as we know many families have already made plans around our published school calendar.
The Silent Journey
"The Silent Journey" will take place on Saturday, February 6, 2010 beginning at 8:30 AM. If you are the parent of a rising first or fourth grader, this
will be an especially worthwhile workshop for you to attend, if you were unable to attend last year. However, everyone is welcome and would find the morning illuminating and interesting. Call either McCrae or Victoria to sign up or to get more details about the program.
Another New Addition Samhitha (EI) finally has her little sister! Hamsini was born on Thursday, January 21, 2010 at 10:36 PM. She weighed 6 lb., 4 oz. and was 19½” long. Congratulations to the whole family!
The Montessori Community
Catherline McTameney will be addressing Montessori parents on Thursday, February 11, from 7:00 – 9:00 PM. Attached here is a flier about that evening talk entitled “The Montessori Parent: A Montessori Primer.”
Elementary Testing
EWMS teachers have been administering the Terra Nova standardized test to all children in second grade and older since Tuesday. Testing will continue in the first part of the mornings through Friday. Please make arrangements to have your children arrive at school well-rested, having eaten a nutritious breakfast, and on time. Thanks for helping your children do their best on these tests!
Haitian Relief
The classroom collection jars for Haitian Earthquake Relief are getting quite full thanks to your children’s interest and tenacity and to their families’ generosity. We will be counting up the money raised and sending it off on Friday, January
30, 2010. We will certainly let you know how much your children raised.
Help Wanted
We would welcome office help on Wednesdays and/or Fridays if you have time. Answering the phones and doors, helping children make copies and generally pitching in would be entailed. If you have time and interest, or just want more information, please contact McCrae.
Did You Know …
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born 254 years ago today in Salzburg, Austria. It would take 201 continuous hours to play all of the works he wrote in his 35 years of life. Mozart is widely considered to be one of the greatest classical composers of all time.
Assembly Line Last week’s Junior Achievement assembly on Friday saw the classes combined. The children worked together on several activities focused on the topic of community.
This Friday’s assembly will feature Wimington’s Mayor James Baker who will talk to the kids about his job. The kids have been asked to think about what they might like to know about the job of mayor.
They’re Here!
EWMS received a grant from Welfare Foundation to support the purchase of new iMacs for the multi-media center, lap tops to be designated for the classroom teachers’ use, and a new server for the school among other things. Yesterday, our shipments from Apple started trickling in, and within the next several weeks, we should be up and running with the new equipment!
Fundraising News
Between now and February 10, the PTO is sponsoring a Box Tops for Education Challenge. Earlier this week, each child in the school will have received a paper satchel for transporting collected box tops back to school. At school, they will glue the box tops to paper bouquets holding ten box tops each; these will be displayed in the front hall as they get filled up. We want to see how many
we can collect when we work together in a short period of time. The PTO is sponsoring an ice cream party in each of the classrooms to celebrate our success on Wednesday, February 11, 2010, and at that time, we’ll have a tally of the number of box tops collected during the challenge!
Remember, EWMS will hold its annual fundraiser, a silent auction and chili cook-off on Saturday, April 17, at The Exchange on Market Street. We have just received word that Currie Hair Skin & Nails will give each attendee a gift bag to include a gift certificate to the new salon located in Justison Landing! A Save the Date email will be coming out soon, and tickets will be available for purchase thereafter. We will need help for this event, including soliciting silent auction items. If you need documentation, ideas, or guidance, please contact Victoria or Danika.
Alumni Update Patrick Flynn and his wife, Kelley, yesterday welcomed Robert Emmett Flynn, who weighed almost ten pounds! The new family lives happily in California.
