February 3, 2010

green logoGreen Tip from Quinn
Instead of going home from school and just watching TV, go outside.  It saves energy when you turn off electronics AND you get exercise.

Re-enrollment
Remember, re-enrollment documentation must be returned by February 17 to receive the discounted re-enrollment rate.

Recycle Bank Grant
Our EWMS friends and families have already donated 41,100 points toward our Recycle Bank grant, and we need only 8,500 to reach our goal. Thanks in advance for helping us reach that goal.  At the Recycle Bank website, just go to “Get Rewards,” then to “Green Schools Program,” and then scroll through until you find us!

The Montessori Community
Author of The Tao of Montessori, well-regarded Montessorian, Catherine McTameney, will be addressing Montessori parents on Thursday, February 11, from 7:00 – 9:00 PM with a talk entitled, “The Montessori Parent:  A Montessori Primer.”  This talk is being sponsored by the Montessori Teachers’ Association of Delaware.  Attached here is a flier about that evening talk.

The Silent Journey
"The Silent Journey" will take place on Saturday, February 6, 2010 beginning at 8:30 AM. We are glad to have so many current and future EWMS parents joining us for the morning!

Fundraising News
Remember, EWMS will hold its annual fundraiser (a Chili Cook-off and Silent Auction) on Saturday, April 17, at The Exchange on Market Street.  A Save-the-Date email will be released today; please forward it to anyone you think might be interested in attending.   We expect the event to be very popular and it is limited to 120 attendees, so getting your tickets early will be important.  We have already begun collecting items for the silent auction, thanks to several of you who have found unwanted or undelivered gifts in the attic!
If you would like to enter your chili in the cook-off, EWMS families will have registration preference for one week, after which registration will be opened up to the broader Wilmington community.

Green Garden Club
AppleMark
The Green Garden Club has spent some time raking leaves and composting during their weekly meetings.  The club will meet tomorrow to plant seeds in such a way that they will be able to watch the root and shoot systems develop.

Snow Angels
AppleMark Children love to play in the snow.  To do so at school, they must have gloves/mittens, a hat, snow pants, and boots in addition to their regular winter coat.  Please help your children be prepared to play in the snow when it next comes.

DCAD World Record Attempt

The Delaware College of Art and Design is attempting to break a Guinness Book world record this Saturday, February 6, 2010.  If you would like to have your artistic hand in the attempt, check out their website for details.

Ski Trip

Unfortunately, we have cancelled the ski trip scheduled for next Thursday, February 11, 2010.  It will, instead, be a regular school day.

Valentine’s Day
heartsIn deference to those of you who will have made plans around our advertised school calendar, we will be celebrating our EWMS Valentine’s Day on Wednesday, February 10, 2010.

Assembly Line
AppleMark
The Junior Achievement assembly held on Friday, 01/29 focused on produce and farms.  Using stickers, the children “planted” crops on their own farmland.

Box Tops for Education Challenge
counting penniesEWMS kids have been hounding their parents to buy products with Box Tops for Education coupons on them, and have been cutting the coupons out even before the products have been used.  We will report in next week’s newsletter about how well we did on this challenge, and the children will be celebrating their tenacity with a PTO-sponsored ice cream party in their classrooms on Wednesday.  There are several Box Tops for Education incentives going on, one being a way for you to earn 1,000 extra points for the school in the month of February.  Check out the website.

Labels for Education
Donna Thomas, the Box Tops and Labels for Education maven, reminds us that we can also collect “Labels for Education.”  These are found on V-8 beverage caps, Campbell’s, FrancoAmerican, Pepperidge Farm, Prego, and Swanson’s labels.

Alumni Update
Claire Gallo, in middle school at Cab Calloway School of the Arts, and Abbey Killheffer, a junior at that school were both awarded Gold Keys for their work at the Delaware Regional Scholastic Art Award Exhibition.  Abbey’s award was for digital art and Claire’s was for drawing.

Haitian Relief
AppleMark Thanks to the support you offered your children in our coin drive for Haitian relief, we raised $285.07, which was sent off on Friday.  The oldest children in the school helped count the donations, which were then carted in a cubby to TDBank where the coins were run through the Penny Arcade.
