Please note: this week’s newsletter is one day early due to the anticipated bad weather tomorrow. Parents should check their email and/or look in their Parent Handbooks for other ways to learn about school closings.
Green Tip from Quinn
After you are done charging your phone, game, or other electronic thing, remember to unplug the charger. If you don’t, then the electricity will still flow through and it’s a big waste. It’s called the “energy vampire.” (Help on this green tip was offered by my mom.)
Re-enrollment
Remember, re-enrollment documentation must be returned by February 17 to receive the discounted re-enrollment rate.
Recycle Bank Grant
Our EWMS friends and families have already donated almost all the points we need for our Recycle Bank grant; we need only 400 to reach our goal. Thanks in advance for helping us reach that goal. Our EWMS families and friends have shown great support of this school through this effort!
At the Recycle Bank website, just go to “Get Rewards,” then to “Green Schools Program,” and then scroll through until you find us!
The Silent Journey
"The Silent Journey" has been rescheduled for Saturday, February 20, 2010. If you have not already done so, please let the office know that you are planning to attend.
Assembly Line
Last Friday’s assembly was a W.O.R.K. assembly for the kids in EC. We saw practical life work, heard pages from storybooks, saw impressive multiplication problems, and were wowed by the kids’ poise and grace. Here is a collection of shots from the day.
Miss Michelle also told the group a bit about snow as the pending blizzard was on everyone’s mind, and we heard Robert Frost’s “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” and the book, Snow, by Uri Shulevitz. It was a fun and varied assembly.
(Thanks, Charlie and Josh, for repairing our “microphone.” It’s ready for the next W.O.R.K. assembly thanks to your work!)
Box Tops for Education Challenge
The Box Tops for Education Challenge was due to wrap up tomorrow. The weather may prevent our culminating activities from happening exactly as scheduled (see above). The excitement the kids have shown is extraordinary, and we’re sure they’ll be glad to do this again during T.V. Turn-off Week. When we have a final tally of what we collected, we’ll let you know! There are several Box Tops for Education incentives going on, one being a way for you to earn 1,000 extra points for the school in the month of February. Check out the website.
Labels for Education
Donna Thomas, the Box Tops and Labels for Education maven, has realized that she has received no V-8 juice bottle caps, though she is sure that some of you could have had a V-8. Simply rinse and dry the lids off and place them in the Box Tops collection box in the front hall.
News from Veena
As many of you know, long-time EWMS 3 – 6 teacher (and Governor’s award for Excellence in Early Education recipient), Veena Rao took a year off so she could spend some time in India. After some scheduling glitches, she finally left last week for a four-month sojourn in her homeland. Veena will spend some time with her father in addition to taking yoga classes, attending a family wedding, and generally reconnecting with her roots. She’ll back in the US in early June, and will be back at EWMS for the 2010 – 2011 academic year!
DCAD World Record Attempt
The Delaware College of Art and Design’s attempt to break a Guinness Book world record has been postponed to Saturday, March 6, 2010. If you would like to have your artistic hand in the attempt, check out their website for details.
There’s No Business like Snow Business
The elementary kids have enjoyed using cubbies to make snow bricks these last two days. They have made quite a structure, and are hoping the next snowfall will enable them to add to it next week.
Fundraising News
We encourage you to visit The Exchange on Market Street. This is the restaurant that is
sponsoring our Chili Cook-off on April 17, 2010.
If you are interested in entering your chili in the cook-off, please submit the attached registration form. Please also send off the attached save-the-date card to folks in your address book who you think would enjoy a Chili Cook-off and Silent Auction.
We have begun to collect silent auction items, but are, or course, in the market for lots more. The businesses you visit regularly are good ones to ask for a gift basket or gift card. Remember, if you like a particular establishment, others likely will, too!
Green Garden Club
Last Thursday, the Green Garden Club planted bean seeds in clear plastic cups. They placed the seeds against the plastic and put soil in to hold the seeds in place. As the root and shoot systems emerge, the club members will be able to watch the seeds grow.
Green Garden Club members are encouraged to participate in Project Feeder Watch (a Backyard Bird Count) between February 12th and 15th. They should watch a feeder for 15 minutes and tally the birds they see. The information they collect will be sent to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
Alumni Update
Malinda Alexander-Rosario got married in summer 2008 and gave birth to Django in September 2009. Geoff Alexander is working as a craftsman (woodwork) and handyman in Philadelphia.
Box Tops Challenge and Valentine’s Day Well, the weather has not been cooperative with our plans for much of anything lately. IF we are in school tomorrow, we will hold our Valentine’s Day events and Box Tops Challenge Ice Cream Party as planned. If we are not in school tomorrow, all of this will be shifted to Thursday morning. If we can’t be in school on Thursday, then we will celebrate Valentine’s Day and the Box Tops Challenge on Tuesday, February 16, 2010. Thanks for your flexibility.
The Montessori Community
Author of The Tao of Montessori, well-regarded Montessorian, Catherine McTameney, will be addressing Montessori parents on Thursday, February 11, from 7:00 – 9:00 PM with a talk entitled, “The Montessori Parent: A Montessori Primer.” This talk is being sponsored by the Montessori Teachers’ Association of Delaware. Please watch your email about the status of this talk; the coming weather may necessitate canceling it as Ms. McTameney may have trouble getting to Delaware. As it stands now, the event is slated to go on as scheduled.
