Green Tip from Quinn

Maintenance Day
There will be a maintenance day at EWMS this Saturday.  Please contact Elizabeth Gehrt if you plan to attend.

Fundraising News
Unfortunately, the Exchange restaurant, that was set to host our Chili Cook-off and silent auction, has closed its doors.  We have several other irons in the fire and the event will go on as planned on Saturday, April 17, 2010 from 6:00 – 10:00 PM.
Recent exciting silent auction donations include three nesting fruit bowls by and lunch for two at Simon Pearce, Theater N tickets, and a box of fossils!  We are still in need of “cheer” for our wheelbarrow of cheer.  Please raid your larder for that gift bottle you know you will never use!
Get your tickets in the office now:  $30/person or $60/couple.

Assembly Line

AppleMark At the assembly on Friday, March 12, Quinn (EII) presented the Clock of Eons, a classic Montessori unit about the formation of the Universe. She accompanied her presentation with an active volcano (showing the molten rock which cooled, forming the crust and continents), pictures on the computer (among them several photos of species that developed in the Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic eras), and her standard quips and jokes that make her such a gift to our school. In the spirit of scientific inquiry, a sort of open forum developed after the presentation with Quinn answering questions and listening to other children’s thoughts. E1 delayed their lunch to stay even longer, and to appreciate the visual aides to Quinn’s presentation. Many thanks to Quinn for her hard work and bold spirit in presenting (a full half hour!) to such a large group. She was more than considerate in making sure each child had his or her turn in speaking, in clear and informed answers, and her diplomacy as the leader of the event. All of her teachers swelled with pride, including Keenya Smallwood, one of Quinn’s EC teachers, who saw her as the embodiment of Montessori’s vision.  Special thanks, too, to Raymond and Rhys who stood by Quinn’s side to bolster her courage.

Birthday Celebrations at EWMS
Birthdays are a big deal for kids, and we at EWMS enjoy celebrating them as much as they do.  In the Montessori tradition, we represent the age of a child by having her/him walk around the “sun” (a candle) one time for each year of life while holding the globe (the Earth).  We make birthday wishes and we sing.  There is also often a treat shared in the classroom by the children, teachers, and invited guests.  In some instances, this is something prepared in the classroom with the teachers or a parent.  In some cases, it is something provided by the parents and brought in from home.  We encourage you to choose healthy treats to celebrate your children’s big day (fruit, for example).  Please discuss the options with your child’s teacher when her/his birthday draws near.  Also, remember that we do not use tree nut or peanut products at EWMS and we eschew candy in almost all instances.   It is our duty to keep our allergic children safe, and it is our responsibility to help children learn healthy, lifelong eating habits.

Green Garden Club
The Green Garden Club will be meeting tomorrow, Thursday, March 18, 2010.  They plan to spend the afternoon doing a park clean up and searching for signs of spring.  Children should be picked up at 4:00 PM or plan to join the extended day program.

Please Touch Museum Trip
