Green Garden Club News
The Club will not be meeting tomorrow following the zoo trip. Please plan to pick your children up at the normal time, if they are not leaving early after the zoo trip.
On Earth Day, Thursday, April 22, the Green Garden Club will be walking up to the Wilmington Library and Rodney Square for special Earth Day programs after lunch. Wearing club shirts that day will make a nice statement! The club will not meet after school next Thursday due to this special outing. Last Thursday, April 8, the Master Gardeners came to speak with club members about honeybees and their value to the ecology. The children learned about bee habits, types of bees, and how honey harvesters dress for their jobs. Did you know that there are three kinds of honey bees in a colony --- a queen bee, drones and workers. The queen lays the eggs. The drones are male bees that mate with the queen. The workers have many tasks in the hive including feeding the larvae, cleaning the hive, and fanning their wings to cool the hive. Worker bees also collect nectar which they make into honey.
Fundraising News
The Chili Cook-off and Silent Auction happens this Saturday from 6:00 – 10:00 PM at the Urban Café on Market Street. There are still a few (15 only!) tickets available: $35/person or $60/couple (the price goes up at the door!) and the evening is lining up to be both fun and savory. Thank you to all the
parents, vendors, chefs, volunteer judges, and others who are making this possible!
The PTO is planning a second Box Tops for Education challenge to run during TV Turn-off week. Remember box tops can be found on products such as General Mill’s cereal boxes, Scott paper towel wrappers, ZipLock brand packaging and Old El Paso products. Look for the logo (←), clip it out and send it in. Most box tops are worth 10¢ and all of those ten cents add up. If you have a stash growing, next week is a good time to send your collection in.

Zoo Trip The Philadelphia Zoo trip is tomorrow. Please plan to be here in time to leave the school promptly at 9:00 AM. Children will need snacks to eat on the bus on the way to the zoo and lunch to eat on the way back from the zoo. Lunches and snacks should be packed in a well-marked disposable bag. Small juice boxes work well for this trip as well (please, no cans or bottles). It is forecast to be 72° and sunny tomorrow. Children may need light jackets and should have comfortable footwear for walking the 42 acres of the zoo. Please do not send money with your children. This is a quick trip meant for viewing the fauna we don’t usually get to see. Time spent in the gift shop is time not spent seeing the animals. Because of allergies, we also eschew the snack stands at the zoo.
We will arrive at the zoo by 9:45 and will leave there at 1:00, meaning that we will be back at EWMS by about 1:45 PM. Young children are often exhausted from this trip and would benefit from an earlier pick-up it you can adjust your schedules.
T.V. Turn-Off Week Festivities
T.V. Turn-Off Week happens at EWMS beginning on Wednesday, April 21. We begin the week with a Book Fair (beginning on Monday, 04/19) to get folks in the mood for reading in lieu of screen time.
The real festivities start at 5:00 PM on Wednesday, April 21 with the potluck dinner. Come one, come all. Bring a dish to share, a blanket to sit on, and your best interested-audience-member demeanor as the EWMS Thespians will put on a skit at 6:15 PM. You won’t want to miss it!
To give the kids something to think about and do during the week, we have a dress-up theme for each day. Below is a schedule.
Maintenance Day There is a maintenance day this Saturday beginning at 8:00 AM. Lots of little jobs have piled up in the last many weeks, so we will welcome your help on Saturday. For more information, contact Elizabeth Gehrt, the Maintenance Chair.
