Green Tip from Quinn
Before recycling your plastic bottles use them again. It’s a lot easier than going to the store and buying a reusable bottle. But if you want to go to a store to get a reusable bottle, that's good, too.
EI Class News
Attached is the news from EI. They've been as busy as wrens at nest-building time on the second floor.
Zoo Trip The weather was stellar and the animals were interesting for our trip to the Philadelphia Zoo. Thank you all for chaperoning children:; this kind of event would not be possible without a lot of participation from our parent body.
Fundraising News
The Chili Cook-off was great fun and quite successful. Here is NewsJournal food critic and blogger, Eric Ruth’s take on the event. As we haven’t yet received the final bills for our expenses, we can’t give you a final amount raised. We are confident that we will meet or exceed our goal, however. Thanks are in order to Danika Swan and the rest of the Fundraising Committee, all of the chefs and celebrity judges, and the sponsors and supporters of the event.
From now until Sunday, June 13th, the Learning Express (located in the Concord Square Shopping Center on Rt. 202) will donate 10% of any purchases made by our “community” back to the school in cash. This is what you need to do: ask your neighbors, friends, parents, aunts, uncles and anyone else to mention EW (that’s our name in the system- NOT Elementary Workshop Montessori School) when they purchase ANYTHING at Learning Express. Anyone who mentions EW when they check out will be earning this school 10% of their purchase price. In June, the Learning Express will cut us a check for the total amount. This is an easy way to help our school!
World Harmony Run 2010
Yesterday morning, while some of the EC kids were at the Grand for “The Making of the Ballet,” the rest of us were on the labyrinth for World Harmony Run 2010. This event, involving a group of runners from all over the globe,
started in New York City at the UN. The runners ran from there to Philadelphia, and then to our little corner of Wilmington to promote peace and harmony around the world. We ran around the playground with the group of ten or eleven runners, with their torchbearer in the lead. The torch has also been held by some of the Beatles, Mother Teresa, Muhammed Ali, Sting, Nelson Mandela, and many other folks interested in promoting peace and harmony. Each of the EWMS children held the torch and said something about peace. The World Harmony runners sang us a harmony song and we reciprocated by singing two peace songs lead by Michelle. The runners will run through all 48 contiguous states and will then fly to Alaska and Hawaii.
Alumni Update Kempton Baldridge, Jr. is graduating from Johns Hopkins next month with dual degrees in History and Theater Arts. He will spend the next year in the Marshall Islands teaching English as a Second Language for WorldTeach, a non-governmental organization funded by Harvard. Kempton writes, “I really wouldn’t be where I am now were it not for my 6 years at EW.” Nicole Penn is finishing her first year at UD in the nursing program. Mieke Lynch, will graduate from the IB program at Mount Pleasant this spring and will study International Relations and play field hockey at Brown University beginning in the fall. Sophie Day is taking a year off from her studies at Tampa University to work with the Episcopal Service Corps in NOLA. Sophie and her siblings Ryan and Hannah have participated on four service trips to NOLA.
Ryan Day has earned the rank of Eagle Scout and will be having a Court of Honor to celebrate this feat in June. Ryan is a freshman at Tampa University. Hannah Day, a junior at Wilmington Friends School, will be performing in the school’s spring play, Shakespeare’s “As You Like It,” this weekend. Paryse Demby is on the Honor Roll at Brandywine Springs.
Green Garden Club News
The Green Garden Club is scheduled to go up to Rodney Square tomorrow early afternoon in order to participate in the Earth Day Festivities there. They will be closely monitoring the weather, however; if it rains, they’ll eschew the event. The club will not be meeting after school tomorrow due to this excursion.
Grandparents’ Day
We have begun to receive RSVPs from grandparents who are planning or unable to attend the May 7th Grandparents’ Day! It is very helpful for us to have an accurate count, so, thank you, grandparents!
In-service Day Care
There is an in-service day scheduled for Friday, April 30, 2010. If you will need day care for your child(ren) that day, please sign up using the attached form. Please see Laura for more information.
Assembly Line
Friday’s assembly was interesting to the young and old alike. Two firefighters from the City of Wilmington, including Emma Jefferies’ son, Louis, showed the kids (and adults) the equipment they use and talked
about fire safety. They also stressed that firefighters are there to help and are not to be feared. We should all make our presence
known to firefighters if we’re ever in a situation where we need them.
T.V. Turn-Off Week Festivities
T.V. Turn-Off Week begins in earnest at 5:00 PM today with the potluck dinner. Come one, come all. Bring the family and a dish to share. We’re moving the festivities inside as we expect rain, but the show will go on! The EWMS Thespians will be performing at 6:15 PM and the BOGO book fair will be open until 7:00 PM. There will be a raffle for books, too!
To give the kids something to think about and do during the week, we have a dress-up theme for each day. Here is a schedule:

Maintenance Day Thank you very much to Elise, Elizabeth, Kym, Melissa, and Umesh for all the work that got done here on Saturday. In addition to building a new “Million Cube” for EI, painting, and gardening, the committee cleaned out our basement steps, disposed of many things and found loads of vacuum cleaner bags for machines we no longer have. Rather than throwing them out, we thought we’d see if we can put them to use. If you have an upright Eureka vacuum cleaner that uses 4100, 4300, 4400, 4500 or 5180-89 series bags, or a canister that uses type EX bags, let us know and we’ll pass them on.
