Green Tip from Quinn
One day a week, try not to eat meat. Meatless Monday is a way to be healthier and it saves a lot of cows, chickens, pigs, etc.  "Our goal is to help reduce meat consumption 15% in order to improve personal health and the health of our planet. We're a non-profit initiative, in association with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health."

Green Garden Club News
The Club will meet tomorrow (in the rain) as usual.  Club organizers have lots up their sleeves.  Please plan to pick club members up at 4:00 PM or from the extended day program.

Needed:
The elementary group is planning a trip to the Franklin Institute on Friday, May 14, but is having trouble rounding up enough drivers.  If you are able to drive, please contact Kerry Shweiki as soon as possible.

Fundraising News
We have earned over 6,000 points through the Labels for Education collection you have done and Donna has compiled.  These points will be used for playground equipment and art room supplies.  Thank you all for helping this school.

Grandparents’ Day
Grandparents’ Day is this coming Friday.. Children should pack their lunch as usual.  Lunch will be provided for the grandparents and a dessert will be provided for children and their guests. Our caterers must have a final count by this afternoon.  If you are not sure if your parents have RSVPed, please contact the office

Parents, please remember to alert your child’s teacher if your child will be leaving early and/or with anyone other than a regular carpool person on Friday.  Children must be signed out in the office or at the back gate if they leave at any time other than their regular pick up.

There are set “performance” times for each class, but the day is Open House in format, otherwise.  Below is the schedule in case your parents have misplaced theirs:

Time

Class/Ages

Location

9:30 AM

EI (6 – 9 year olds

Second Floor

10:45 AM

EC2 (3 – 6 year olds)

Annex (outside)

11:40 AM

EC1 (3 – 6 year olds

First Floor

Noon

LUNCH in each classroom

When signed out early, we will plan around the children's not returning to school for the day; this will minimize disruption for the class and for the individual children.

Hours Report
Attached here is an updated hours report.  If you notice a discrepancy, please contact Shuying Feng.  Remember, each parent must complete 25 hours of co-op time per year, and drive on one field trip.  Hours must be completed and documented by Tuesday, June 15, 2010.  The myriad jobs you do help the teachers, show your children how devoted you are to their education, and keep you connected with the school.  All of that is priceless.  Thank you.

Montessori in the News
Kalamazoo Central High won the competition to have President Obama as their commencement speaker.  Clark Montessori, the public junior and senior high school in Cincinnati, OH, made it into the final three.  Congratulations to all the entrants who made it so far in the process, and to the students of KCH who will have President Obama at their commencement.

Cinco de Mayo
While not observed throughout the country of Mexico, the Fifth of May, Cinco de Mayo, is viewed as a day of Mexican heritage and pride among Mexican ex-patriots living throughout the world.  On May 5, 1862, the Mexicans realized an unlikely victory over the French in the Battle at Puebla.  At AppleMark EWMS, Señora Michelle helped the kids commemorate the day!

Did You Know…
EWMS has a long history at Cape Henlopen State Park beginning more than thirty years ago.  Initially, the “Cape Henlopen Trip” was a whole-school affair with children of all ages and their parents staying in the old Fort Miles barracks.  Committees were formed to plan and execute meals and arrange activities.  A weekend was spent together enjoying the beach and each other’s company.  As the school grew, so did the trip until it became too unwieldy.  Unwilling to miss out on all that lower Delaware has to offer, the elementary classes continued the relationship with CHSP.  This year, the EI and EII kids will be going down to CH on Thursday, May 27th and returning on the 28th.  While there, they will enjoy nature programs, spend time at both the ocean and the Delaware Bay AppleMark (where they will undoubtedly “rescue” beached horseshoe crabs), prepare their meals together, and spend time bonding as a group.  The elementary teachers will soon be letting you know what help they will need in making this trip safe and fun for all of the kids.  Thank you in advance for pitching in where needed.

Alumni Update
Kimberly Nance will graduate from The Walker School in Marietta, GA at the end of the month.
