GREEN LOGOGreen Tip from Quinn
This May is national bike riding month.  If you live near your work or wherever you want to go, try riding your bike…unless it’s raining.

Green Garden Club News
The Club will meet tomorrow (in the rain) as usual.  Club organizers have lots up their sleeves.  Please plan to pick club members up at 4:00 PM or from the extended day program.

Thanks
Some flower fairy has been replanting the flower boxes on the Class 2 ramp seasonally.  Now they have a variety of colors of celosia in them and look quite lovely.  Thank you, mystery gardener!

Grandparents’ Day
AppleMark Thank you so much to the Hospitality Committee, additional parent volunteers, and the fabulous catering by Joelle Lacter and Martha Brown, for helping to make Grandparents’ Day such a success. Grand-parents seemed to be enjoying themselves, and the kids loved having their grandparents with them for the morning.  Each class held a performance, beginning with the kids in EI, who shared their work with their grandparents.  Quinn, a class unto herself, directed and produced a Russian folktale play, “The Fish in the Forest,” AppleMark starring herself and her third grade schoolmates.  In EC1, the kids acted out a well-known song (“Roll Over”), as they added the twist of singing in Spanish, as well as singing several other songs.  The EC2 kids put on a play entitled, “It’s Too Noisy .”  All in all, there was a lot to see and enjoy.  We are AppleMark grateful that so many grandparents were able to join us, and again thank the many volunteers who made the day possible.

Maintenance Day
There is a Maintenance Day this Saturday from 8:00 AM until noon-ish.  Please let McCrae know if you can attend.  There are gardening, painting, and general maintenance jobs on the list.

Teacher Appreciation Week
The teachers have been treated to two lunches, coffee, breakfast, chair massages and bouquets of beautiful flowers already this week and it’s only Wednesday.  Thank you to all the parents who have been so generous to and supportive of and the children who have been so loving toward the EWMS staff.

Summer Reading Challenge
The public library's children's Summer Reading Club runs June 1st through August 15th, 2010 for ages birth to 17. Sign-up starts on June 1st.  This year's theme is "Make a Splash. " Readers who complete 10 hours of reading receive a certificate and a free book.  Children can sign up at any library branch and it is, of course, free.  Attached here is a flier about the program.

Computer Safety

Attached here is information from iSafe regarding keeping your children safe when they’re on the internet.  Amy will begin iSafe lessons next week to ready the EWMS students for the summer when some of them may have more time to explore using their computers.  iSafe is conducting a parent survey.  Click on Parent Survey in the quick links and log in using our school number:  11302.

Did You Know…
On February 5, 1824, The Franklin Institute of the State of Pennsylvania for the Promotion of the Mechanic Arts opened in Independence Hall.  On January 1, 1934, the Franklin Institute Science Museum re-opened in its current location, making it one of the first hands-on science museums in the US, “in the spirit of inquiry and discovery embodied by Benjamin Franklin.”
On Friday, May 14, the EI and EII kids will spend the day at the Franklin Institute!
The Read House in Old New Castle, built in 1802 was the largest house in Delaware (14,000 square feet) when it was built.  Today it is a premier house museum in the US with costumed interpreters who cater to children and teachers.  The EC classes will be visiting the Read House and Gardens on Monday, May 17.
