horseshoe crab If you are ever at a Delaware Bay beach in May or June, you might see a lot of Horse Shoe Crabs. If you see one upside down it might look creepy to you, but you should help it. They give people a lot of different but very important things like medicine and they help clean up the ocean.  (Editorial note:  horseshoe crabs are harmless.  If you want to right one, do not pick it up by what looks like its tail.  Rather, flip it using its shell.  horseshoe crabThe “tail,” or telson, acts like the horseshoe crab’s rudder.  It can easily become separated from the shell if used as a handle.)
If you want to learn more about red knots (migrating shore birds) or horseshoe crabs there are some books in the EWMS library.

End-of-Year Picnic
On Tuesday, June 8, all of the kids and teachers head to the Christina Landing Park on Seventh Street for a morning of play culminating in a picnic lunch.  Parents and other interested family members are welcome to join us for all or part of the morning.  The whole school will be eating lunch at about 11:30 AM, so if you would like to take your lunch break with us, plan to be at the park by then.

Did You Know…
Artwork is not sent home throughout the year.  Rather, it is collected and sent home, carefully wrapped and packaged, at the end of the school year.  On Monday, June 7th, bags will be ready for adults to collect from the art room.  They will be labeled with your children’s names and should be carried carefully as they may have clay, papier maché, or other vulnerable media within.
The art room is in need of newspaper for wrapping artwork.  If you have a stash at home, please send it in to Danika.

Last Day of School
The 2009 – 2010 school year draws to a close at noon on Wednesday, June 9, 2010.  There is no childcare that day, and all children should be picked up by 12:00 PM.

paint brushMaintenance and Housekeeping Days
In order to help parents get hours in, we are adding a second Final maintenance and housekeeping day onto the calendar.  We will meet here at 9:00 AM on Saturday, June 12th and Sunday June 13th to take care of the school’s end-of-year housekeeping and maintenance needs.  Remember, hours accountings must be submitted by June 15th.

Thanks
Many of our parents stepped up to label a recent mailing.  Thank you all so much for filling your evening hours with EWMS volunteer work!

Assembly Line
We had a special assembly last Thursday, May 20th to welcome Delaware’s governor, Jack Markell to the school.  Governor Markell got right down on the floor with them and spent 30 minutes talking with the kids about the job of governor, AppleMark
the election process, the "three things" he thinks prepared him for being governor:  being a good listener, reading a lot, and the fact that his parents instilled in him the courage to trust his own beliefs and convictions.  It was an excellent assembly and gave the children another up close and personal exposure to a public official.

Pizza Lunch
The EI and EII children had their pizza lunch today as they will be heading to Cape Henlopen tomorrow.  EC children will have their pizza tomorrow, Thursday, as usual.  The final pizza lunch will be next Thursday, June 3, 2010.

Still Needed
We have nearly enough brown bags for our end-of-year needs, but would still welcome a few more.  If you have any to spare, please send them in to your child’s teachers.

Field Day

On Friday, June 4, 2010 in the afternoon, the elementary kids will head to a local park for an EWMS-style Field Day.  The group will rotate through a series of non-competitive outdoor games and activities, this being another end-of-year bonding event for our oldest students.
EI and EII children should wear loose-fitting clothing and close-fitting footwear (such as sneakers) on Friday, June 4.

Summer Pets and Plants Care
If you’re a caregiver type, and would like to cache some 2010 – 2011 hours early, you may want to consider caring for an EWMS pet or some plants for the summer.  Four school plants or one school pet will earn you an hour per week.  Talk to a classroom teacher if you would like more information or to volunteer, please.
