School Picnic
The weather was lovely, the food tasty, and mood cheerful for our back-to-school picnic last night.  logo
Thank you very much to all the members of the hospitality committee (and so many other’s who stepped up to help), for setting up and cleaning up afterwards.  Thank you, too, for the tasty contributions to the event!

Maintenance Day
paint brushThis Saturday, September 19, 2009, beginning at 8:00 AM is a Maintenance Day.  Maintenance Committee members are encouraged to be here, but everyone with a willing heart is invited.  There is gardening to do in addition to painting and some general repairs.

Classroom Ambassadors
In the vein of the traditional “homeroom parent,”  we have “classroom ambassadors” assigned to each class.  If you think you have missed something, you want clarification on a class event or otherwise need more information, the classroom ambassadors will be your one-stop shopping.  Contact information for the ambassadors is in the parent directory.  Here they are:
EC1      Mary Maguire
EC2      Sandra Han
EI        Kay Stumpf
Of course, if you have a question specific to your child, you should speak directly to the classroom teachers.

International Day of Peace – September 21, 2009
EWMS will be joining 50,000 Montessori children from around the worldin celebrating the International Day of Peace on September 21 at 11:00 AM!   We are still looking for volunteers to guide us through several of the languages on our peace pole:  Arabic, Chinese, German, and Hebrew.  “May Peace Prevail on Earth” is expressed in five languages in addition to English on the pole (we have a volunteer for Spanish). We would like to have parents read the phrase and help us repeat it back.  We would LOVE to hear May Peace Prevail on Earth in other languages as well.  If your native language is not represented on our peace pole, but you are available at 11:00 AM on Monday, September 21 and would like to introduce us to it, we would welcome your participation.  Anyone interested in participating should contact McCrae or Amy.  The more, the merrier!
We are still looking for collage materials for our peace tiles.  If you have un-used items in your craft larder that you would be happy to part with, please send them our way.

Parents’ Meeting
Our back-to-school parents’ meeting takes place on Wednesday evening, September 23, 2009.  This is your chance to meet your committee chair, hear from the EWMS board, meet all the teachers, enjoy refreshments with other EWMS parents, and, perhaps most enjoyably, see photos of all the children at work in their first two weeks of school.  Photos start off the evening, so please be here promptly at 7:00 PM!

Photo Day
Susan Patch of PatchWorks Photography will be here on Tuesday morning, September 22 to take school photos.  Order forms were sent home yesterday.  Every child will be photographed, as we display our children’s pictures in the classrooms.  You are under no obligation to order a packet.  If you do plan to order, forms and checks must be returned by Tuesday morning.  If you would like EWMS siblings to be photographed together, a separate form must be filled out as well.  Please remember to dress children in clothing with sleeves.  If you would like your child to dress up for the photograph, please send in a change of clothes in a bag marked with her/his name.  If the weather is conducive, photographs will be taken outside.

Invertebrate Tank

EI has long had an invertebrate tank supporting some fascinating invertebrates (anemones, sea stars, hermit crabs, etc.) as well as some fish.  The tank was rebuilt this summer with help from EI parents who contributed toward sprucing up the tank to commemorate Nancy Q.’s birthday.  Today, AppleMark the children and Nancy were pleased and surprised to have a fish-shaped cake presented to them along with a presentation by Sean from Aquatic Services, who supplies and takes care of the tank.  Sean brought in some more “livestock” and talked to the class about the tank and its critters.  Thank you EI parents and children for supporting the tank, choosing the animals that would populate it, and for honoring Nancy in this way.  Thank you, too, to Kerry Shweiki for the creative, yummy cake.

Congratulations
Olivia D. (EI) placed third in the Wilmington Library Summer Reading Program, having read 95 books in the allotted time!

Wanted

Now is the time when families take stock of the growth that happened in their children over the summer.  As you are weeding through drawers and closets, please consider bringing outgrown clothing in to EWMS to donate to the Clothing Bank of Wilmington.  We have had an EWMS family volunteer to transport any collected clothing to the Clothing Bank of Wilmington.
