Assembly Line
Our first Friday Assembly of the year was held on September 12, 2008 and was hosted by Class 5 who shifted furniture around to give us all room and make us feel welcome. We usually take this opportunity to highlight new faces, so all the new children and teachers stood up to enable us to put faces and names together.
We played some guessing games: Veena and Megan stood up and the children correctly guessed that Veena is our shortest staff member and Megan our tallest and that Shannon is our oldest student and Evan is our youngest, among other things.
Miss Veena, with help from some of her current and former students, did some yoga with us all and
Class 5 helped us learn a new song. We ended with the EWMS signature song: Peace is the World Smiling. Watch this space each week for news of the weekly assembly.
School Picnic, Thursday, September 18, 5:00 – 7:00 PM Tomorrow night is the Back-to-School Picnic. We hope all of our EWMS families will be able to join us. Please bring a dish to share and chairs or blankets for your family. For those of you who need some guidance, here are suggestions for what dishes to bring:
A – F Salad, fruit or snack item
G – P Casserole or side dish
Q – Z Dessert
EWMS will provide beverages, tablewares, hamburgers (and veggie burgers), and condiments.
The Hospitality Committee is still looking for help. If you’re available, please contact Kate Frawley.
Day for Kids On Saturday, September 20, 2008 from Noon until 6:00 PM, the Boys and Girls Clubs will be hosting Day for Kids along the Christina Riverfront. There will be games, rides, activities and much more. EWMS will be hosting a tent (we still need help, if you’re available). Admission, games, rides, and activities are all free for the whole family. We hope to see you on Saturday at the Day for Kids!
The Silent Journey and the Discovery
Some of you have already signed up to participate in the Silent Journey on Friday, October 17 and the Discovery on Saturday, October 18. Though spaces for this program are limited, they are ample, and we encourage you to attend if you are a parent at EWMS, a board member, a committee chair, or are just plain interested. If you have a friend or neighbor who is interested in the Montessori method, sign her/him up!
This parent education program will be facilitated by Mark Powell, a Montessori presenter, trainer (Center for Montessori Teacher Education) and elementary teacher (in California). He holds undergraduate degrees in anthropology, economics, history, sociology, and music from universities in his homeland, Australia, a master’s degree in Education from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA, and Montessori 6 – 12 training from CMTE/NY. He has participated in or facilitated the Silent Journey and the Discovery programs half a dozen times at schools in Northern California, and will bring with him a clear understanding of the Montessori method, education, and the needs of parents as they guide their children through school.
Technology Update
I hope you are hearing about the iSafe program from your students (K-6). http://www.isafe.org "Founded in 1998, i-SAFE Inc. is the leader in Internet safety education. Available in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Department of Defense schools located across the world, i-SAFE is a non-profit foundation whose mission is to educate and empower youth to make their Internet experiences safe and responsible. The goal is to educate students on how to avoid dangerous, inappropriate, or unlawful online behavior. i-SAFE accomplishes this through dynamic K-12 curriculum and community outreach programs to parents, law enforcement, and community leaders. It is the only Internet safety foundation to combine these elements."
EWMS Staff are also taking online lessons in internet safety. In addition to teacher lessons there are also parent lessons that you might like to view.
I hope you will keep the lines of communication open between you and your children about their experiences on the internet. They need to know that, if they find themselves in a jam, their parents will help them out. The more conversations, the better. There are so many wonderful aspects to the internet. It is important that we teach our children how to be safe when they access the internet.
We have asked that every child bring in either earphones or ear buds to use when they are using the classroom and Multi-media Center computers. If you have not yet sent in your children’s earphones or ear buds, please do so as soon as possible so they are able to use the computers.

Alumni Update Tim McBride, a senior at Cab Calloway School of the Arts, was the youngest field organizer on Jack Markell’s winning campaign team and was asked by the candidate’s wife to introduce Jack Markell on primary night. Tim had prepared two speeches, and was thrilled to be able to introduce Jack with the one he had written in case of victory. Tim is now an organizer at Cab Calloway for the Obama Campaign.
In the IB program at Mount Pleasant High School, Mieke Lynch is the Vice President of the Student Council.
Tetanus
Many emergency forms were returned without the date of your children’s most recent tetanus shot. We have been very fortunate over the last many years and have not had to call an ambulance to this school. However, we have been informed by parents who have ended up at the emergency room, and by the paramedics who have conducted our first aid and CPR training, that one of the first responders’ first questions will be the date of a last tetanus shot. Please contact your child’s physician to discern this date and contact the office so we can fill it in on your child’s emergency card.
In-service Day, September 26, 2009
There will be an in-service day on Friday, September 26, 2009. The teachers will be meeting and working in their classrooms that day. If you will need care for your children, you may fill out and return the attached form. Day care on in-service days is available from 7:30 AM until 5:00 PM at a cost of $35.00 per child. If you would like more information, you may speak to one of the extended day staff.
Do you have …
A coffee pot carafe that would fit a Black and Decker 10 cup coffee maker or an 8 – 10 cup coffee maker to spare? Class 5 would like to have a functioning coffee maker. If you can help out, please contact Michelle or Sharon (EII).
Parents’ Meeting, September 25, 2008, 6:30 PM
We hope you will all be able to join us for the Parents’ Meeting. This evening traditionally starts with photos of your children at work in their classrooms – you will not want to miss the show. You will also have a chance to hear from the teachers and the committee chairs.
