The Silent Journey and the Discovery
Please join us on Friday, October 17 and Saturday, October 18 for the Silent Journey and the Discovery. This terrific parent education program is fast approaching. You will want to sign up quickly while there is still space. This program will give you a good sense of your children’s daily, yearly, and career experience at EWMS, while also giving you some Ah Ha! Moments about Montessori education. Remember, you will earn parent hours for this program and we are offering childcare. Please make reservations for yourselves and your children immediately so we can plan accordingly.
Sweatshirt Available We ended up with an extra, red, child’s medium sweatshirt that we are selling for $15.00. If you are interested, please call the office.
Youth CaN Café
Next Tuesday, October 7, 2008 is the date of the first Youth CaN Café. Bring a mug and join us for a cup of Fair Trade Coffee in Classroom 4. The Café will be open from 7:30 until 9:00 AM. Proceeds from this Pay-What-You-Will Enterprise will benefit the Youth CaN club’s environmental project of choice.
Special Guest Presentation
EWMS is very lucky to have a large group of experts to call on to help us help our children. Today, Jean Lynch Samuels, former parent and current bookkeeper shared her expertise about Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur with the kids in Class 5. The students, in an effort to practice the skill, took notes about what they were
learning. Jean brought in many traditional foods to accent her talk, and the children enjoyed dipping challah in honey (for a sweet new year) and tasting apple cake (also representing sweetness). Jean had an apple stuck all around with cloves, a natural smelling salts of sorts to revive the weak on fasting days, and the seeds from a pomegranate as that large number of seeds bespeaks the number of good deeds one should do in the coming year.

EWMS Diversity
As part of the strategic planning EWMS undertook last year, we reiterated the value we place on diversity at this school. A diversity committee has been formed to explore this concept, particularly ways we can ensure continued diversity at EWMS. The diversity committee requests your participation in a brief survey, which is attached here. Please return the survey to EWMS via email or lunch box mail by October 10, 2009. Thank you for helping EWMS thrive.
Alumni Update
Abby Samuels has been elected Student Council Class Representative and Chair of the Social Committee, which includes overseeing student-related activities at Brandywine High School's 50th anniversary homecoming celebration. Abby will coordinate with the organizers of the school’s alumni events for the day.
Tech Corner
A big component of the Montessori curriculum is “Grace and Courtesy.” We strive to be good models to our children and to guide them as they learn to care for themselves, others, and their environment. Since Maria Montessori developed this curriculum, a lot has changed in the world. With the advent of the computer age, we have come to see that Grace and Courtesy must be employed in cyberspace as well as in homes, classrooms, businesses, and everywhere else that people convene. Here is a link from Edutopia (the George Lucas Educational Foundation) regarding on-line manners. One Netiquette tip that appears on many experts’ lists is the importance of removing other recipients’ email addresses when forwarding an email. This cuts down on email addresses getting onto spam lists.
