Green Tips from Quinn If you want to have a bird feeder here’s a way you can have one and recycle.
1. Find an old milk carton and wash it out.
2. Cut a big hole in it.
3. Make a small hole in the top and put a string through it.
4. Fill the carton with birdseed.
5. Hang it up.
EWMS Café The first EWMS Café of the school year took place yesterday. The café will be open again on Tuesday, November 3, 2009. Mark your calendars now and join us for a chat and elbow-rub over a cuppa and a baked treat.
Curriculum Night
The Early Childhood Curriculum Night was held last night. Many parents present expressed their excitement at having seen Montessori materials presented, learning about some Montessori teaching techniques, and the fact that they were able to see some of their children’s favorite activities. Everyone is invited to the Elementary Curriculum night coming up on Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 7:00 PM. It is an interesting evening even if your child is not yet at that level.
Did you know …
Many introductory lessons at the 3 – 6 (early childhood) level are done in silence. This is so that children will be able to focus on the material and the proper way in which to work with it. When there is little vocal sound, children can also better hear the sounds, often captivating, of the material itself. This “point of delight” may draw the child back to the material over and over again.
Assembly Line
We had a guest presenter at our assembly on Friday, October 2, 2009. Mr. M. (Scott Magdycz)
of The American Taekwondo Association, who is the head instructor at ATA’s Bear location talked with the kids about Taekwondo and then had the group practice some of the moves he teaches.
Mr. M, is a 4th degree black belt and four time Delaware State Champion in forms, weapons and sparring.
Remember: if you have an idea for an assembly, please contact Mythili Ganji.
Weekend Happenings:
Get out the parent directory and make plans for the weekend! Here are a few great events that would make for a perfect play-date and the chance to get to know fellow EWMS families better:
1) This weekend is the grand opening of the Dupont Environmental Education Center. Open houses will take place on both Saturday, October 10th from 10-3 and Sunday, October 11th from 12-4. For more information about the free activities at DEEC's grand opening celebration, go to: http://www.duponteec.org.
2) Also free on Sunday, check out the Hispanic Heritage Community Day at the Delaware Art Museum. Kids and their families will enjoy a musical performance and a variety of Hispanic-inspired art activities at this fun-filled event. EI Ashland Overnight
The students in EI will be going to the Delaware Nature Society’s Ashland Nature Center tomorrow. They will be dropped off here with their sleeping bags, lunches, and changes of clothing, and will spend the night and a day and a half at the Hockessin nature center. The class will be back at midday on Friday, October 9, exhausted, but exhilarated having had several nature sessions, taken a night hike, and spent the night in bunks!
Hours Possibility
We need more (and repaired) smocks in the art room. If you sew, we can provide a template and the shirts needed to make smocks for our children to use when they’re in the art room. Please see Danika to volunteer.
Carpooling
In years past, EWMS families have arranged carpooling opportunities with other families at EWMS living in proximity. Several years ago, the State of Delaware began the DART “School Pool” program to help parents arrange rides for their children to and from school and other venues. If you would like to find out more about this program or register for it (or for RideShare, the work commute program) call 1-888-743-3628 (toll free).
In-service Day Care
We are not offering day care on Monday, October 12, 2009, as we did not have the minimum number of students sign up. Please make alternate plans for your children for next Monday, an in-service day. There will be no school that day.
Global Handwashing Day Did you know that handwashing with soap is the most effective, least expensive way to prevent the spread of many diseases. Handwashing will be especially important during flu season this year. Global Handwashing Day takes place a week from tomorrow on Thursday, October 15, 2009, and is a day set aside to draw attention to the importance of handwashing with soap.
