Did You Know …
Class 5 (EII) had an overnight field trip at the Ashland Nature Center last week. In addition to several other programs, they enjoyed learning
about stream ecology and habitats. Thank you very much to the parents who pitched in with driving, meal preparation, supervision, and overnight help.
Tech Corner
Attached here is news about the kindergarten and elementary computer program. Read all about it!
The Silent Journey and the Discovery
About a dozen slots remain for this comprehensive parent education program. Join us for an hour on Friday, October 17 (beginning either at 3:15 or at 5:00) and from 8:30 until 1:30 on Saturday, October 18th first for guided observations of the learning environments here at EWMS and then for hands-on experience and practice with the materials and activities your children work with on a daily basis followed by questions and discussion facilitated by Mark Powell. Contact the office to sign up.
Youth CaN Café The first-ever Youth CaN Café was a big success thanks in large part to Jessica Reed who helped the Youth CaN kids bake both banana bread and a much-lauded pumpkin chocolate chip loaf, to the children in the club, particularly Quinn and Gwyneth who were this week’s hosts, and to club coordinator, Amy Dwyer. The Club is still deciding what project to contribute their money to, with solar cookers and saving the manatees as top choices.
The Youth CaN Café will be open again on Election Day, November 4, 2009. Join us for a cup of coffee and then go out and vote!
EWMS Diversity
October is Diversity Awareness Month. Now is an excellent time to think about the value of diversity at EWMS. Please fill out and return the diversity survey created by the diversity committee.
Art in Windows
The Wilmington Renaissance Corporation and the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs are sponsoring “Art in Windows,” a program designed to highlight children’s artwork. Several EWMS children have their artwork on display in Market Street business windows for the next several months. If you are in Downtown Wilmington between now and the
end of December, look for EWMS artwork on display!
Parent Hours
Remember, each parent is responsible for 25 hours of volunteer time between the beginning of the school year and June 15, 2009. It is easiest to report your hours as you complete them. You may do this by filling out an hours-reporting form (attached here) or by emailing Parent Co-op coordinator, Shuying Feng. Hours-reporting forms should be returned to school via lunchbox mail or may be placed directly in the notebook located in the Parent Information Center. Each parent is also responsible for driving on one field trip. Please report your first drive on your hours report as completing your driving obligation. All subsequent drives will count toward your hours obligation.
Assembly Line
At the October 3, 2008 assembly, Miss Lisa told us the story of the “Little Red House with No Door, No Windows and a Star Inside.” This house is an apple, and when cut cross-wise, reveals a “star” of seeds. There was an audible “oooh” when Lisa cut an apple to reveal this star. We learned that there are over 7,000 varieties of apples in the world and that China produces more apples than any other country, with the USA coming second. Some of the older children in EI read parts of their Scholastic News to the group, so we learned about orchards and packing apples for sale. Everyone was pleased to get a slice of a red delicious apple at the end of the assembly.
Fundraising
For many of you, this is the United Way season. If you contribute through the United Way, please consider writing, “Elementary Workshop, Inc.” on the write-in line or using our UW designation number (9473). Thank you for helping our school.
Green Gardening Club
The EWMS Green Gardening Club got underway yesterday. Parent, Debbie McDowell, the elementary age children in the club, and faculty adviser, Amy Dwyer, have plans for the schoolyard’s beds, bulb planting, and to take on other “greening” projects. You can already see the improvements with pansies planted and prepared beds. Have a look!
