Green Tips from Quinn CFL (compact fluorescent) light bulbs last about ten times longer than the regular light bulb.
Next week I will write about how to recycle them.
Maintenance Day
There is a Maintenance Day this Saturday, October 17, 2009 beginning at 8:00 AM. If you are available, you are welcome to join us.
Did you know …
Montessorians recognize “three periods” of learning. The first period is the gift of information. Lessons given to children in large or small groups or individually are the “first period” in a child’s learning. During the “second period,” children work with the information. This period can be quite protracted, with children seeming to do the same work or activity ad nauseam. It is during this period that children build their understanding and their conceptual base. They work through an interest, make connections, and ready themselves to add new knowledge. In the final period, children are ready to show what they have internalized. It is during this “third period” that children show that they can count to 100, have mastered their spelling list, or know the names and locations of all 50 states.
Global Handwashing Day Tomorrow is Global Handwashing Day. We all need to remember the importance of washing our hands regularly with soap. Tomorrow, people around the world will be spreading information about the value of handwashing. To ward off disease and infection, it is also important to remember to refrain from touching one’s face.
First PTO Meeting
There will be a PTO Meeting this evening at EWMS from 7:00 – 8:00 PM. All are welcome.
Green Garden Club
The Green Garden Club’s first meeting will be tomorrow, Thursday, October 15, 2009 after school. The club will meet outside in fair weather, and inside in inclement weather. Outside club activities will focus on the “garden” aspect of the club, and inside activities will be more “green.” The club will meet from 3:00 – 4:00 PM.
Field Trips
All of our students have field trips next week. Our EC children will be going to Walnut Springs Orchard on Monday for the morning and our elementary kids will be sailing aboard the Kalmar Nyckel.
Parent Hours
About once a month, we will run an hours report with the newsletter. It is also available at the Parent Log-in section of the website. Please check your entry each month to be sure it reflects the hours you have reported doing and the field trip drives you have completed. If you are not listed, we do not have any reported hours for you as yet. Let Shuying Feng know if you find a discrepancy.
EI Ashland Overnight
EI had a wonderful trip to Delaware Nature Society’s Ashland Nature Center. The festivities began at Coverdale Farm where the group saw the farm animals and gardens, and then moved to the Nature Center.
There the group had several other programs including “Animal Skulls,” “Lenni Lenape,” and “Native Animals.” They took a night hike and experienced their night vision capabilities, too. Many thanks to all the parents who shopped, drove, chaperoned, helped in the kitchen and settled the children in at night. Thanks, Nancy and Lisa for organizing this great trip.
Hours Possibility
We are still looking for a parent volunteer to repair and/or make new art smocks for us. We will provide the supplies.
Tweet! Tweet!
Follow EWMS on Twitter! If you do not already have an account with twitter, you will have to create one....once that is done, click on this link: www.twitter.com/EWMSnews and then request to follow us. Your request will read "pending" until EWMS accepts (this is a privacy feature that will only allow EWMS parents to read the school's news).
Here is the fine print: we won't barrage you with messages multiple times a day. We will use this medium to 1) remind you of EWMS events, 2) let you know of school closings in the winter, and 3) help you keep your finger on the pulse of EWMS - instead of "How was your day?" you could ask your child, "Did the fire drill go well today?” “Tell me about the karate guy at the assembly,” or “How did the field trip go?" Our tweets will be short, simple and average about two a week.
