Green Tip from Quinn When you’re washing the dishes instead of leaving the water running, plug up the sink and use the water you already have. It might sound gross, but it works.
Parents and Kids Working Together Day
This afternoon between 2:00 and 5:30 PM is your opportunity to come into the classrooms to work with your children on the materials they talk about most. Please plan to come later than 3:00 PM if your child naps.
Conferences
Conferences are scheduled for a week from Friday and the following Monday, November 13th and 16th. If you have not confirmed you conference time with your child’s teacher, please do so immediately.
Did you know …
Children as young as three can, and are expected to, complete a “cycle of work.” In Montessori programs, children learn valuable organizational skills and help maintain the learning environments (classrooms) as they do their work on a daily basis. To complete a cycle of work, children must:
determine where they will work,
retrieve all the required supplies and materials,
execute the work carefully and properly,
return the unused supplies to their storage area and the materials to their shelf in the same condition in which they found them, and
then tuck in their chairs or roll up and put away their floor mats.
When children internalize the steps in and the importance of completing this cycle they are better prepared to stick with more challenging concepts until mastery, will know how to plan and execute school assignments, and will grow into adults who can juggle various projects adeptly.

Fundraising News
The coupon book fundraiser ends on Friday, November 6, 2009. Please return your order forms or unsold books to the office by Friday. Remember, EWMS will earn $10 for every book sold and the $20 price of the book can be made back with one BOGO ticket purchase from the Delaware Theater Company or OperaDelaware!
The Silpada Designs Sterling Silver Jewelry fundraiser begins next week. A catalog will be sent home for families to peruse, and a “Mom’s Night Out” event has been planned for November 23rd. At that time, you’ll get to see the jewelry first hand. Attached here is a flier describing both the fundraiser and the Mom’s Night Out. One or our easiest fundraisers, Box Tops for Education, has just earned us $61.00. Thank you, Donna, for counting, bundling, and sending off those hundreds of Box Tops.
Parent Hours Opportunity
The Marketing Committee is looking for some volunteers to help staff our information table at Wilmington’s Fall Fest this Saturday on Market Street. It is forecast to be a beautiful day to be outside. If you can help sometime between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM, please contact Victoria or Rupa.
Book Fair
There is a book fair in the front hall and conference room beginning today. You won’t be able to miss it! Books may be purchased at the beginning and end of your child’s day.
PTO Meeting
The next meeting of the EWMS PTO will be held at the school next Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at 7:00 PM. All are welcome.
Halloween Morning
We had devils, witches, ghosts and a zombie balanced out by princesses, fairies, and pixies on our playground last Friday for the annual EWMS Halloween Fair. The traditional parade took us in front of the school and church, where we crossed the street, and walked back toward Fifth Street in front of our neighbors’ houses. One of our neighbors greeted the parade in costume! Following the parade we had a costume “show off” circle and then dispersed to partake of the ten booths.
The “donuts on a string” booth is the perennial favorite, but the variety of choices makes it so that there is something for everyone. There were two booths that had “winners” this year. Greta (EI) won the candy corn guess with the estimate of 160, which was exactly right. Two children, Will (EC2) and Kayla G. (EI) each went home with a small pumpkin, the circumference of which they had come closest to guessing. Many thanks to the teachers for making it possible and to the parents for all their help.
Saturday Rendezvous at the Fall Fest
A loose group of EWMS children and parents will be meeting in front of the Grand Opera House on Saturday, November 7 at 11:30 AM to enjoy the Fall Fest together. If you’re interested, show up then and there!
