Green Tip from Quinn Instead of using plastic snack bags for carrying snacks or stuff like that, re-use a container.
Parents and Kids Working Together Day
We were so pleased by the terrific turn-out at Parents and Kids Working Together Day. It is invaluable to children to have their parents involved in their schooling, and will be invaluable to you to have spent time in the classroom with your child before your conference.
Conferences
Conferences are scheduled for this Friday and next Monday, November 13th and 16th. If you have not confirmed you conference time with your child’s teacher, please do so immediately.
Did you know…
Children as young as three can, and are expected to, complete a “cycle of work.” In Montessori programs, children learn valuable organizational skills and help maintain the learning environments (classrooms) as they do their work on a daily basis. To complete a cycle of work, children must:
determine where they will work,
retrieve all the required supplies and materials,
execute the work carefully and properly,
record their work if applicable
return the unused supplies to their storage area and the materials to their shelf in the same condition in which they found them, ready for the next person, and
then tuck in their chairs or roll up and put away their floor mats.
When children internalize the steps in and the importance of completing this cycle they are better prepared to stick with more challenging concepts until mastery, will know how to plan and execute school assignments, and will grow into adults who can juggle various projects adeptly.
Green Garden Club
The Green Garden Club had a visit from Hetty E. Francke, a “Master Composter,” who came to speak
with the group about composting. The kids were fascinated to learn that shredded newspaper or cotton fabric can be included in a compost pile because those things are organic and will decompose. It was the red wigglers (worms) that were most captivating, however.
Fundraising News
The coupon book fundraiser ends this Friday, November 13, 2009. Please return your order forms or unsold books by Friday. Remember, EWMS earns $10 for every book sold!
One of the easy things you can do to support the school is link your Super G (Giant) Stop & Shop card to the Elementary Workshop Montessori School. The A+ Bonus Bucks program earns the school a percentage of all purchases made at Giant or Super G. Your Giant Card must be re-registered each year. It’s easy to do and all purchases made in November will qualify for the program for those cards that are registered by November 30. Click here to register your card now!
The Silpada Mom’s night out is set for Monday, November 23 at 7:00 PM. Attached here is an invitation.
PTO Meeting
There is a PTO Meeting tonight beginning at 7:00 PM. Everyone is invited!
Thanks!
Parents, children, and teachers have all been very flexible while the new gas lines are laid along Pine Streets. The cones, backhoe, and dug-up street have meant that parents have had trouble getting to us, teachers have had to be creative at drop-off time, and parking has been a challenge. We are grateful for your good will and flexibility during this construction.
Longwood Gardens
On Monday, the early childhood classes went to Longwood Gardens to experience the splendors of fall. Despite the discombobulated start to the day (see Thanks! above), the trip was great fun for the kids who saw a miniature train, marveled at
huge gourds, enjoyed the children’s garden, and collected stamps in the conservatory.
It is crucial that we have plenty of parents for a trip of this nature; when tours are neither appropriate nor available for a large group of children so young, lots of parent help provides guidance, hand-holding, and extra eyes, making the experience a positive one for children.
Book Fair The book fair will be open for the PTO meeting on Wednesday evening and until 4:30 PM tomorrow. If you haven’t had a chance to look through the collection, you still have time; your children (and the teachers) have created wish lists, and there may be items in the collection that would make good holiday gifts for the people on your list!
Congratulations
Olivia R. (EI) won first place in the 25-yard breaststroke for 8 and unders at the Pumpkin Patch Mini Meet held at UD last month. Congratulations, Olivia!
