Green Tip
green logoEach person in the United States uses 80 – 100 gallons of water each day.  You can easily use less water.  Run full loads of laundry, use the dishwasher, turn off the water when brushing your teeth, and shower rather than bathe.  These are some simple things you can do to conserve water.

Conferences
The teachers thank all of the parents who attended conferences on Friday and Monday.  We are always pleased by the commitment our parents show to their children by adjusting their schedules to be here.

Did you know…
The bead cabinet houses chains that vary in length from one bead on a wire at about 1” long to 1,000 beads in ten-bead lengths at 27’ long.  These chains are first used for linear counting in the 3 – 6 AppleMarkenvironments, then for skip-counting and squaring and cubing work in the elementary environments.  When a five-year olds count all 729 beads on the “long 9-chain” it can take a long, concentrated time and will result in a great sense of accomplishment.  When they then write 9, 18, 27 … 711, 720, 729 in a booklet, this sense grows while they are introduced to the multiples of 9, work with place value, and internalize the cycle of work.

Green Garden Club Longwood Trip
The Green Garden Club is planning a Longwood Gardens trip for Wednesday, December 9, 2009!  Using the attached flier, make your reservations by Tuesday, December 1st, so that tickets may be purchased in advance.

Book Fair
Thank you all for your support of reading by and with your kids.  When we have a final figure for the book fair, we will let you know.  You will have helped the library and classrooms shore up their collections through your purchases at the fair.  We also really appreciate the books parents purchased specifically for their children’s classrooms.
Finally, thanks to all of the parents who helped set up and tear down the book fair, and who spent long afternoons staffing it.  Avanthi, Debbie, Dianne, Kate, Rich, and Val made this work for us!

Alumni Update
Abby Samuels, a senior at Brandywine High School, was selected to attend Colin Powell’s speech at the University of Delaware on November 3 and The Student Leadership Conference hosted by Lt. Governor Matt Denn there on November 6.
Josh Morris-Levenson is a member of Tatnall’s Jazz band.
Marvin Sikes, Jr., a seventh grader at Nativity Prep Charter School, made honor roll in his first marking period.

Technology News

Attached here is the news from the kindergarten through fifth grade technology classes.

Open House Season
This is the time of year when families begin looking for schools for their children.  EWMS Open Houses are scheduled on the first and third Tuesdays of the month, so the upcoming Open Houses are December 1st and 15th, and January 5th and 19th.  As in years past, we will be offering a discount off the coming year’s tuition to any current family who refers a newly-enrolling family to the school.  As an added bonus, we will be waiving the application fee for any new family that attends a December or January Open House.  Help us spread the word:  EWMS will benefit, you will benefit, and new families will benefit, too!

3rd Annual Tuff Turkey Challenge
It’s that time again!  Val Whiting’ GameShape is sponsoring a Thanksgiving Day workout.  Simply bring a non-perishable food item with you to Ursuline Academy on Thursday, November 26 at 8:30 AM and receive “a cutting-edge workout powered by GameShape.”  Everyone age 6 – 106 is invited. Register here and start your Thanksgiving Day out on the move!  (Space is limited.)

Assembly Line
AssemblyAssemblyOn Friday, November 6, the assembly guest was Nikhil’s (EI) grandfather, Professor G. M. Rao, who explained the mysteries of how telephones work.  With the help of some traditional “land line” phones, some cell Assemblyphones, and some drawing, he helped clarify how sound or radio waves get from one phone to another.

Maintenance Day Cancelled
There being so little on the list of maintenance needs this month, the maintenance day long scheduled for this Saturday has been cancelled.  If you have some time on your hands, and would like to take something on, please contact Elizabeth Gehrt who may be able to set you up with a job you could do on your own time.

With Your Help, We Made It!
We have reached our RecycleBank goal of 11,000 donated points, thanks to all the friend of EWMS out there.  If you have points to donate still, we now ask that you wait until after the next round of grants in March, as we will then ask for your help in raising the points we will need if we receive another RecycleBank grant.  Thanks again for helping us reach our goal.

Fundraising News
The coupon book fundraiser has ended.  Thank you all for selling books to your neighbors and friends.  Coupon books will be here at the end of this week or early next week, and will be sent home immediately.  As soon as we have a final figure for this fundraiser, we will let you know.
We hope to see all of you at the Silpada Mom's Night Out at the home of Marie Cox this coming Monday, November 23rd from 7:00 – 9:00 PM.  It will be a great time to visit with each other, shop for the holidays, and help the school too!  A detailed invitation is attached to this email.  Feel free to bring a friend or two.  See you Monday!
Friendly's On Tuesday, December 8, 2009, the Elementary Workshop Montessori School will benefit from Friendly Restaurant’s Family Night fundraiser:  10% of the restaurant’s till from 5:00 – 9:00 PM will be donated to EWMS.  You need not tell the server you’re with the school or present a coupon; just show up for dinner or an ice cream treat.  This is really easy!  So, ask your colleagues, friends, alumni families (you know who you are!), basketball teams, and neighbors to eat out at Friendly’s at 2670 Kirkwood Highway between 5:00 and 9:00 PM on Tuesday, December 8, 2009.

New Business to benefit EWMS

On Tuesday, December 1 from 7:00 – 9:00 PM, the Learning Express, which just opened on Concord Pike, will donate 10% of proceeds from sales generated by people using the 20% off coupon attached here.  Everyone is welcome to download and use this coupon! If you were planning to head there before then, scope out the place but save your buying until December 1st!
