Montessori Academy of Christina (MAC)/Parents’ Meeting, 02/27/12

Please plan to join us at the Parents’ Meeting on Monday, February 27, 2012 beginning at 7:00 PM.  We hope you will have received your choice admittance letters, and that we’ll have answers to some of the myriad questions we have posed to the Christina School District by then.

Franklin Institute Trip

The children in EC thoroughly enjoyed their trip to the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia on Monday.  Most popular seemed to be The Heart (a perennial favorite), “driving” the ship, and the electricity rooms, but the children also worked with mazes, made paper, and loads of other things.  Thank you, Miss Keenya, for organizing, Melissa, for arranging drivers, and all the parents for chaperoning for this terrific experience.

Assembly Line

Parents Eddie Mui and Lisa Romish, kindly conducted the assembly on Friday, January 20, 2012.  They spoke with the children about Chinese New Year, taught them “Gung hei fat choy ” (“Happy New Year”), read a story, and had a mini fashion show starring Mia and Olivia. The children learned about buying new clothes and eating long noodles to ensure good luck and long life. 2012 is the Year of the Dragon, and children who hadn’t known before, were glad to learn what animal represents the year of their births.

Maintenance Day Thanks

We are truly grateful to dads, Jamie, Jeff, and Michael, who all spent several hours here on a snowy Saturday morning taking care of our maintenance needs.  The next maintenance day is Saturday, February 11, 2012.  Mark your calendars and plan to join us if you’re available.

Alumni Update

Julia Randolph-Reed, an eighth grader at Ursuline Academy, has been named a 2012 Ursuline “Presidential” Scholar, resulting in a sizable yearly scholarship toward Ursuline tuition should she plan to spend her high school years there.

Nina Randolph-Reed, a senior at Archmere Academy has received acceptance letters with scholarship offers from Ursinus College and the University of Delaware Honors program.  She is awaiting word from many other schools before she makes her college decision.

Having attained a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management from the University of Delaware this spring, Scott Killheffer is working in that field in Baltimore.

Kate Killheffer is studying business administration at the University of Delaware.

Also at UD is Nicole Penn who is in the School of Nursing.

David Penn is a senior at Howard High School of Technology, where his focus is carpentry.

Morning Drop-off

At EWMS, we take your children’s safety seriously.  Please do not let your children out of the car on their own during morning drop-off; rather, please have them wait until a teacher opens the car door and gets them out of the car.  We can only feel sure about your children’s safety if we are aware of them and are watching them from the car into the school.  Thank you for your help with this.

Fundraising Committee Meetings

The Fundraising Committee is holding meetings at two times next week in the hopes that committee members and other interested parties will be able to attend one or the other.  The meeting times are:  Monday, January 30 at 7:00 PM at Chelsea Tavern on Market Street; and Tuesday, January 31 at 8:45 AM at EWMS.  The committee will be making the preliminary plans for the Third Annual Chili Cook-off and Silent Auction tentatively scheduled for Saturday, April 28, 2012 at the Urban Café in Wilmington.

Craft and Cooking Club

The Craft and Cooking Club has been in session for three weeks already.  Reports from the children are very positive.  Reports from Friday’s soup-eaters, who benefit from the Thursday cooking extravaganza are superlative.  Thank you Lauren, Mike, Pat, Ramona, and Victoria, for making this club possible.

Box Tops Collecting

The closing date for Box Tops and Labels for Education submissions for the school year is approaching. We will be holding two contests between now and March 16th. A prize will be award for the most Box Tops collected as well as a prize for the most Labels collected. When bringing in both Box Tops and Labels over the next 6 weeks, please put them in a baggie, envelope or on a collection sheet (available in the Parent Information Center) with your child's name on them, so we can tally up who has the most. Remember to ask neighbors, friends, and family for any of these items as they often go right in the trash when they could be helping our school.
